The Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND) is transforming education in Nigeria by offering interest-free student loans, ensuring that financial barriers no longer stand in the way of academic success. This initiative, launched by the Federal Government under the leadership of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, marks a significant step toward making higher education accessible to all Nigerian students.
The NELFUND student loan application portal https://portal.nelf.gov.ng/auth/login officially opened on May 24, 2024. This is your opportunity to secure the financial support you need to achieve your academic goals.
How to Apply for a NELFUND Student Loan
Step 1: Create Your Account
- Go to nelf.gov.ng or visit the student loan portal directly at https://portal.nelf.gov.ng/auth/login
- Click on the “Apply Now” button.
- Click on “Get Started” and answer the initial questions.
- Confirm your Nigerian citizenship by clicking “Yes, I am a Nigerian.”
- Select your school from the dropdown menu and provide your matriculation number to verify if your details have been uploaded by your institution.
- Enter your JAMB details. If your NIN is not registered with JAMB, you’ll have an option to input your NIN for validation.
- Enter your email address and create a password. Then, click “Create Account.”
- Check your email for a verification link and click it to complete your account creation.
Step 2: Complete Your Profile
- Log In: Use your email and password to log in.
- Update Contact Details: Enter your current phone number, residential address, state, and local government area of residence.
- Update Educational Details: Select your higher institution and enter your matriculation number.
- Verify Your Bank Details: Enter your BVN, select your bank, and input your account number.
- Save Changes: Click “Save Changes” to complete your profile.
Step 3: Apply for the Loan
- Request a Loan: Click on “Request for Student Loan” at the top right of the screen after logging in.
- Choose Your Loan Type: If you need an upkeep loan, check the box and click “Continue.” If you only need to cover institutional charges, click “Continue” without selecting the upkeep loan option.
- Upload Supporting Documents: Upload your admission letter (mandatory), and optionally, your student ID and institution invoice.
- Agree to the Terms: Read through the loan overview, agree to the Terms & Conditions and the GSI Mandate, then submit your application.
- Check Your Loan Status: Click on “Loans” to view the status of your application.
NELFUND Expands Access: Student Loans Now Available for 70 State-Owned Tertiary Institutions
The Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND) is thrilled to announce a major development in its ongoing effort to make higher education more accessible to all Nigerians. As of July 7, 2024, students from 70 state-owned tertiary institutions can now apply for interest-free student loans through NELFUND.
The management of these 70 institutions has successfully submitted their student data to the NELFUND Student Verification System (SVS), allowing their students to access the loan application portal immediately.
